[History of Bridgman and Lyman Bookstore of Northampton, Mass.] / Clifford H. Lyman. [1936-1938]

Mounted clippings from The Hampshire gazette (1936-1938) written by Lyman recalls the history of and people behind the bookstore in Northampton, Mass. started by Simeon Butler (1770-1847) in 1797. Known by various names through the years, Lyman began working in the store in 1881 and was made a partner about 1897 when the store became known as Bridgman & Lyman. Through the years the store was not only a bookstore, but also a publishing house and bookbindery. For a time the store also sold wallpaper and did picture framing. Lyman recalls his association with Sidney E. Bridgman (1827- ) and recounts the various important individuals who frequented the store, as well as something of the history of Northampton. Lyman sold the store upon his retirement in 1935; the store closed in 1937. Lyman died in 1941.
